Beware of the System Sellers

By Bill Burton, About.com

For as long as people have been gambling, someone has been trying to develop a system that will make them rich. Some of these people get rich by selling these so called “Guaranteed Systems” with mail-order solicitations or internet ads. Hardly a week goes by that I don’t receive some sort of invitation to take advantage of the “Secret that the casinos don’t want you to know about” that will make me a winner at Slots, Keno or any other casino game.

All mail order solicitations are basically the same. They are filled with hype to get you excited but devoid of any real details. As much as we hate to admit it, greed is a human emotion that we all have to a certain extent. Who doesn’t like to be rich? These ads play on this emotion and get us excited about a chance for an easy life if we purchase their fool proof system.

Most of these systems fall into two categories. The first is usually a money management concept that doesn’t work. Some of these are versions of the martingale system where you double your bet each time you lose. If you suffer eight losses you will usually exceed the table maximum and quickly be out a lot of money. Other systems tell you all the great advantages of hedging or progressing your bets. You must remember one thing when analyzing any system. No money management system can change the mathematical house edge that the casinos have. Hedge betting will only help minimize your losses. Progression systems can help you win more when you catch a winning streak but still have no effect on the house edge.

The second is a repackaged version of a concept that does work, but you can probably get it cheaper and in more complete form from a reputable author. Some of these “Systems” are nothing more than information about basic strategy for Blackjack or video poker. This is information that has been around for years and is readily available in books or even free on the internet.

There is no system in the world that will give you an edge or help you win at slots. Slots contain a Random Number Generator (RNG) that determines the pay back. There is nothing you can do that will alter this. Last year I received an offer for a slot system that was guaranteed to make me a winner. The ad said it would show me how to find the slots there were paying off and it came with a promise of a refund of the full purchase price if I was not satisfied. The cost was ten dollars.

I sent for it. Not because I thought it would work but because I wanted to see what the scam artist were trying to sell. The “System” came in the mail and it was a poorly duplicated sheet of paper telling me I should go to the casino and look for any machine that had a winning spin displayed on the screen. The theory was that the last player was foolish to leave on a winning spin and the machine was due to keep paying. This of course was nonsense so I sent a letter asking for my refund. I’m still waiting for the check. Now when I receive these offers in the mail, I write back and tell them I would be happy to test and review their systems and publish the results here. So far I have not had any takers.

Don’t fall for any of the systems being sold by the scam artists. Take the money you would have sent them and use it play you favorite casino game. It will be more enjoyable and if you get lucky more profitable. Good Luck!

Until next time, remember:
"Luck comes and goes...Knowledge Stays Forever!"
